I saw Newsnight the other night. A film-maker revisited a projecty about alcoholism he made some time ago. Some of his subjects were dead, some had tried to kick it and failed. Only one out of half a dozen had made it through. Most of the people I know drink too much (myself included) but these people were seriously ill because of their addiction. Why do we drink......to forget, to anaesthetise our woe's.....?
Apparently a huge factor in recent increases in the hideous culture of city centre binge drinking is cheap alcohol being available in supermarkets. The vendors use it as a loss leader to ensure that people shop with them. While prices of alcohol have risen by circa 25% in bars and clubs they have fallen by circa 25% in retail. It's no wonder....

Hey Roger, I know what you mean. I don't drink myself but I have friends who do it all the time (we are early 20s). They have to go along with the others. That's why they drink. I guess there are many reasons for drinking - and lots of other ways to escape. I think it is about escape more than anything else.

Hi Emma...crikey, a month has passed, lost in boozy christmas oblivion......no, not quite. It is about escape and a feeling of wellbeing to some extent I guess but kind of conversely it actually dulls the senses. So maybe it's more to do with filling a gap left by a loss of belief in something good, an innocence maybe, a relationship with nature? I'm thinking out loud here....
