RE: What do you do if you are half way through a d, Posted 19 Jun 2008

I guess my view on this is, If what you are doing is not what you want then change it, we only have one real shot at happiness, and success is not the only thing worth achieving, there is more to life than we think and happiness is something worth chasing. We have to remember though that levels of happiness differ from person to person so what I really mean is, be true to yourself to find inner peace contentment, and fulfillment

I agree that exercise is great when you are feeling low. It can be so hard to get going initially but I certainly feel more positive after swimming, a walk or even just achieving some of the domestic tasks I have been putting off. It helps me sleep better too.

getting back to work when receiving benefits, Posted 12 Jun 2008

Hi, I am currently exploring the possibilities of returning to work when in receipt of income support/incapacity benefit. I am unclear about the amount that can be counted as "therapeutic" work before benefits are lost. It is such a big step returning to work after a long period of illness, part time hours would be ideal initially but I am not sure how to go about it. Any suggestions on where I can get good info on this?

Regular, not heavy drinking, Posted 20 May 2008

Hi, I find I have a few beers most nights after work. I don't get very drunk, but the total adds up to almost a couple of dozen a week, especially if I have a few extras over the weekend. Does anybody else do this, and what do you think about it?

Bursts of energy, Posted 7 May 2008

Yesterday I ran up a big hill nearby (One Tree Hill actually) three times in a row. It is interesting because the first time I ran up was the hardest in terms of cardio fitness. Later it was my legs that starting giving out. It is as if your body acclimatises to the cardio requirements and prepares you for the next time you run up. Does anybody know the scientific reason, and is there specific training method(s) that can help improve it?

Being interested in other people offers you new ways to view yourself. I have a good friend who is currently fighting cancer. He's still surfing! It was the blossomest, blossomest, blossom I have ever seen.

Caffeine and weight loss, Posted 10 Mar 2008

Does anybody know what the effects of caffeine are on weight loss? I have heard conflicting points of view. This website (http://www.teeccino.com/weightloss.aspx) says caffeine increases appetite which leads to weight loss. It also aggravates stress levels which cause many people to turn to food. I'm looking through for the actual physical effects with regard to retaining weight.

RE: What do you think about the Health Exchange?, Posted 14 Feb 2008

I think it could be a really good site if more people know about it. When I first entered the site I felt the sig-up link could be more obvious. Having signed up, I felt that the first page might benefit from having a simpler outline of what the site offers and what mambers can do on the site. How often would you recommend we do a health chart? Thanks, Niall.

I think it is a very good idea, but in order for it to be better, more people must join. The web address is quite long and hard to remember, i will easily forget it. It would be great if it was made shorter. Also there is no way of inviting strangers to become buddies. Overall very good.

RE: Acne advice, Posted 12 Feb 2008

Hi I'm not middle aged, I'm in my mid twenties. but I've dealt with moderate acne (mostly non-inflammed with 4-10 inflammed spots at one time) since I was 12, and not much has worked. accept accutane but you can't stay on that forever. my dr recently gave me differin gel and it made it worse at first, but after 2 months I'm rather impressed. its removed the non-inflammed acne and controled my inflammed breakouts.

RE: NEWSNIGHT 13.12.07, Posted 16 Jan 2008

Hi Emma...crikey, a month has passed, lost in boozy christmas oblivion......no, not quite. It is about escape and a feeling of wellbeing to some extent I guess but kind of conversely it actually dulls the senses. So maybe it's more to do with filling a gap left by a loss of belief in something good, an innocence maybe, a relationship with nature? I'm thinking out loud here....

RE: What do you think of the Health Exchange?, Posted 16 Dec 2007

I did find it rewarding completing my health status - it made me thoroughly think about the different areas that affect my well-being. I have battled with depression since my late teenage years and felt 'cheerfully sheepish' when I compared my results and found that my hope, sense of security and self esteem levels were even above average. This reflects the settled year I have spent on effective medication but also perhaps reveals my high expectations of life and demanding ideas about how I should experience it. I feel that having a 'track record' of personal health status would have been a huge help to me during my attempts to find a treatment for my depression. I often tried to keep my own - in the form of journals or wall charts - in the hope of tracing down a pattern in my moods - seasonal/cyclical etc, but never succeeded in creating a record I felt justified my experiences. ...or did, and then felt scared (when I was feeling better) about the 'down-times' I'd had. I also...

RE: What do you think of the Health Exchange?, Posted 15 Dec 2007

Hi Emma Many thanks for these comments, really appreciated. I agree about the topic list - to some extent it is bound to be a bit arbitrary. I like the idea about spirituality - someone else mentioned this recently too. There is definitely room for the professionals to explain the basics in a calm and balanced way. At the moment we are piloting for functionality. When we launch - we hope in January - we want about 50 situations students may experience, we will review the items in the foundations, and we will add 'official advice'. We are talking with Boots plc about the latter - so watch this space. Can I ask - how did it make you feel when you set out your health status? For some people it can be quite a powerful experience.

Hey Roger, I know what you mean. I don't drink myself but I have friends who do it all the time (we are early 20s). They have to go along with the others. That's why they drink. I guess there are many reasons for drinking - and lots of other ways to escape. I think it is about escape more than anything else.

RE: What do you think of the Health Exchange?, Posted 15 Dec 2007

I think it has the potential to help people but I have a couple of queries/concerns; - do the topics in the health profile reflect a certain concept of health?...eg. are libraries a health factor for everyone, what about access to ancestral lands? I may have missed it - but was there a 'spirituality' topic. I would consider spirituality to be a part of my health picture. - what about the 'scare' factor of having too much information. I know I've googled a health concern only to be stressed out by the 'personal stories' which can be dramatic and desperate - leading me to panic about my own future. Isn't there a reason for having 'professionals' explain issues - so that it can be done in a balanced, researched, relevant way? (Although I do think there needs to be space for people actually experiencing a condition to share.)

NEWSNIGHT 13.12.07, Posted 15 Dec 2007

I saw Newsnight the other night. A film-maker revisited a projecty about alcoholism he made some time ago. Some of his subjects were dead, some had tried to kick it and failed. Only one out of half a dozen had made it through. Most of the people I know drink too much (myself included) but these people were seriously ill because of their addiction. Why do we drink......to forget, to anaesthetise our woe's.....? Apparently a huge factor in recent increases in the hideous culture of city centre binge drinking is cheap alcohol being available in supermarkets. The vendors use it as a loss leader to ensure that people shop with them. While prices of alcohol have risen by circa 25% in bars and clubs they have fallen by circa 25% in retail. It's no wonder....
